Joy started working at Sparrow FET in October 2015 in the sales and fundraising department. She sells accredited Apprenticeships, Learnerships, Skills Programmes and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) initiatives focused on the B-BBEE Codes of good practice. Sparrow FET Enterprises is a social enterprise enabling her to offer clients solutions to improve their B-BEE scorecard under the elements of Skills Development, Enterprise Development, Enterprise Supplier development and Social Economic Development. Joy grew up in Cape Town in a home with her parents, two brothers, three sisters and Grandmother. After finishing her matric she went on to complete a Certificate in Theology, a Leadership Development programme, at Cape Evangelical Bible Institute. She worked for a local church for 15 years alongside her husband in a pastoral role and then 2012 qualified as a specialised project manager completing her National Diploma at the Nelson Mandela University Business School in George. In 2017 she then completed her Skills Development Facilitators qualification with EDTP SETA. She has had an incredible career of growth and development but her highlights have been the confidence she gained from getting a formal qualification and the other, registering a business in 2015 as she had to step out of her comfort zone without being afraid of failing. It gave her the opportunity to develop the courage to keep going. There have been many women in Joy’s life that have inspired her, her mother being one. “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Proverbs 31”. These are qualities around which Joy grew up as she experienced them in both her mother and late grandmother. Her advice to young women is “Education is important. It gives you the confidence to perform your tasks but it is your character that will guide and sustain you as you engage with those around you. “Passion opens doors even when such doors are invisible and look like brick walls” Prof Thuli Madonsela. Go on and do all you can with your life, and make it the life you want to live.”
